Suffolk licenses more of the HVAC trade at the county level than Nassau does. Consumer Affairs issues the home improvement license, which in Suffolk’s code includes HVAC ductwork, and its licensing boards issue the plumbing and electrical licenses, including restricted licenses written for heating and cooling work. Suffolk Consumer Affairs licenses over 15,000 vendors, and more than half of the licenses it issues or renews each year are home improvement licenses. For which license fits which job, read how to check an HVAC license.
On the East End, ask any company how far it travels before you book; a shop in Huntington and one in Quogue cover very different ground. Suffolk’s HEAP office, listed by OTDA, handles heating assistance for the county.
Search Suffolk Consumer Affairs' online license database, or call (631) 853-4600, which also tells you about open complaints. Running a home improvement business in the county without a license is illegal, Suffolk says.
For some work, yes. Suffolk issues a restricted plumber's license for HVAC piping and restricted electrician licenses for HVAC and for oil and gas burning equipment. Tying into the water supply or the gas service is reserved for a licensed master plumber.
Suffolk Consumer Affairs advises getting three written estimates before hiring any contractor.
